WHO IS BONES ENTERPRISES?
Well it’s a 9 year long story but I will hit the highlights to make it brief. 9 years ago around the time when eBay first started getting a little attention my mom had a small eBay business selling home furnishings and accents. At the time I was working for the largest Ford dealership in the Southeast as the director of customer relations. Some what of a dead end job and not very exciting but at least I was able to make a living in the car business and at that time it was enough but I always wanted more. Being in the position I was in I had made a lot of contacts with vendors, service reps. and a wide variety of other people in the car business. One of those contacts was with a small local company who did wheels and tires for car dealerships. They would show up in the morning with 10 or 12 sets of chrome rims and tires and take of the factory steel wheels and hub caps or other less attractive wheels and swap them for the new shiny chrome ones. I asked them one day what they did with the ones they were taking off. I was told that they were taken back to the warehouse and stored until they accumulated so many that they threw them away. Yes, that’s right; they were throwing away brand new rims and tires. I asked if they would sell them. I was told that they do sell some of them and if I was interested I could come down to the warehouse and look around. So I did. I took $550 with me and bought the very first set of Mustang Bullet wheels to come into the state of Georgia. I didn’t have any idea how much they were worth but I knew they were worth more than $550. So I gave them my $550 and on that day Bones Enterprises was born.
I took the rims and tires home, took a few pictures and typed up a description on an old 186 computer and printed it out and headed to my moms. I asked her if she could list my rims and tiers on her eBay page. She did and they sold for $1300. It was at that point that I knew that eBay would one day be huge and that I had the makings of my own business. I called up the rim place I got the first set from and asked if I could come down and buy some more rims and tires. They eagerly said yes. So I did and within a month I was making more selling rims and tires on eBay than I was at my full time job. So I quit, got a business license, tax i.d. number all the things you need to have a successful small home based business. It worked great for about another month until I had sold everything the rim place had and my supply had dried up. Uh Oh!!!! Now what? I just quit my job and I have nothing else to sell. Undaunted I went to work on the phones calling anyone and everyone I knew who I thought might have something automotive related that I could sell. Soon I found out that there was an endless supply of stuff sitting in warehouses, garages, shops, attics and basements. So the quest was on to build a businesses out of helping other car guys (and gals) get rid of stuff they had laying around and at the same time help other car guys and gals who might be looking for that stuff.
Soon the business was growing faster than I could keep up. Every room in my house was full of some sort of car stuff, from floor mats, to running boards, to more rims and tires. It didn’t take long for it to outgrow my little 1600 square foot house so I built a two story 3200 square foot shop in my back yard. The neighbors hated it but it was all up to code and passed inspection so there was nothing they could do about it. I hired a shipping guy and went to the next level. UPS was making regular stops at my house and I knew that it wouldn’t be long before I outgrew my shop as well. I was right. By this time I had hired an I.T. guy, a purchasing agent and an office manager and we all worked back to back in an 8x12 spare bedroom. Of course that couldn’t last forever. In the coming months we were forced to move into our first warehouse. 6,000 square feet and we were getting called upon by parts managers, warehouse managers and just about anyone else in the automotive business that needed to make inventory “go away” for whatever the reason. Over the years we have expanded 4 more times and we are now in our own free standing building with 30,000 square feet of warehouse space and a full blown showroom and a staff of 9. We sell a huge variety of automotive products ranging from OEM Ford and GM accessories to one of the widest selections of rims and tires found on the net. We have two SEMA certified wheel and tire experts on staff and we sponsor several automotive forums. We are continuing to grow each year and hope one day to be on the same level as Summit Racing or Year One but in a different sort of business. We like rims and tires and it’s our passion to take care of other rims and tire junkies which is why we were excited to be asked to help get this project done for all of the Trailblazer/Envoy owners.
We often get asked where did we come up with the name Bones Enterprises? That’s another story in itself.
It’s a short one so I’ll spill it for you all real quick. When I was a kid I was super skinny, way skinnier that a
kid my age should be and so my grand father gave me the nick name “Bones”. I told him that when I got older I was
going to start my own business and call it Bones Enterprises. 26 years later I did and we are going to be having
our 9 year anniversary next month.
Hopefully this will shed some light on me and our business ad let you guys know I am serious about getting this done for you all. I am a true 110% car guy and it’s my passion to take care of other car guys and to me there is no better way to take a project from just an idea through all the headaches to come out shining like a new dime when it’s all over. You all got to promise to send me pictures of your rides so we can add to our website once you get these beauties put on.
